PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

MATT LOVEJOY

Matt Lovejoy’s passion for photography began when he was just twelve years old. In high school, he built a pinhole camera from a paint can and learned the art of film development and darkroom printing.

At nineteen, Matt launched his professional photography career at a ski resort in Maine, capturing everything from family portraits to the thrill of giant slalom ski races. His talent for portraying people in their element quickly became his signature style.

By his early twenties, photography was taking him across the country. One summer, he worked on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, capturing passengers aboard the cruise ship, M.S. Mount Washington. The following year, he found himself photographing whitewater sports in North Carolina, followed by a stint traveling nationwide for fraternity and sorority portraits at major universities.

In 2005, Matt arrived in Utah to work as a photographer at Alta Ski Area. What began as a single season turned into a long-term stay.

“I came to Utah for one ski season … that was nineteen years ago,” he says. “The mountains lured me here, and I think that’s what is keeping me here, mostly. I love hiking, biking, and skiing in the Wasatch and Uinta mountains. I’m also a plant nerd, and there’s nothing like the wildflowers here during the summer months.”

Around this time, Matt also began photographing weddings, traveling across the U.S. for nearly a decade. To date, his photography journey has taken him to 45 states.

Today, Matt runs his portrait studio in South Salt Lake at Poor Yorick Studios, focusing primarily on professional headshots, but he still finds time for family portraits, senior photos, and the occasional wedding.

“It’s tough to pinpoint what my favorite photoshoot has been,” he shares. “One that sticks out in my mind though is the 2010 Dew Tour in Salt Lake City when I got to meet Shaun White and photograph him winning the skateboarding vert competition. While I primarily shoot portraits, action sports photography will always be my favorite.”

Beyond his studio work, Matt is also an active member of the local music scene, promoting concerts at various venues and regularly hosting the Bluegrass Express radio show on 90.9 FM KRCL.
